2005 World Series of Poker - 2005 WSOP Winner

Yet another online poker player ended up being the 2005 WSOP winner! The 2005 World Series of Poker marks another year where the online "outsiders" stole the show from the so-called professional poker circuit, and in 2005 their presence was even more extreme than in 2004. The final table of the 2005 World Series of Poker was anything but a who's who. Most of the players present were new to high profile tournaments, though not necessarily newcomers to the game. Like the 2004 world champion of poker, the 2005 WSOP winner learned his gift for the game at online casinos where over time he became "a force." It is clear that the poker world is changing as the presence and power of online players makes itself felt among the poker elite.

Before becoming the 2005 WSOP champion and winning the 7 million dollars (a WSOP record) attached to it, Joseph Hachem was an Australian chiropractor recovering from a severe blood disorder. He started playing online poker while recovering, which began an interest that blossomed into the multi-million dollar 2005 World Series of Poker number one-prize, a feat which required this virtually unknown 39 year old player to rise above the other 5,000 competitors including some of the toughest poker pros around. It was the well known Aaron Kanter, in fact, that almost cost Hachem his seat at the final table and his 2005 WSOP win.

It is true that Hachem was not well known in the poker world before the 2005 World Series of Poker, but that does not necessarily imply inexperience. Hachem had time to develop his chops in the online poker world, which then led to playing small events and poker tournaments in his home country of Australia. It was not too long before Hachem had both the skills and the cash from his online casino efforts to post, and feel confident about posting, the $10,000 2005 World Series of Poker buy-in.

Perhaps because of the 2004 World Series of Poker, poker fans and press were prepared for a poker player of online origins to take the champion title. There was not the same shock and outcry this time around. However, by becoming the 2005 WSOP winner, Joseph Hachem has demonstrated that the victory of an online player in 2004 was not a one-time deal. At the 2005 World Series of Poker, Joseph Hachem in fact turned the 2004 victory into a trend when he himself became the 2005 WSOP winner. Whether this trend will continue into 2006 remains to be seen, but the odds are in their favor!
