Best Texas Holdem Hands

Simply put, the best Texas Holdem hands are those that win. This statement is not only self-evident and extremely unhelpful, but it gives the element of chance far too much power in a game that is partially math. Since there are a definite number of cards, players, and hand combinations, what constitutes the best Texas Holdem hands is something that can and should not only be measured but memorized. Knowing the best Texas Holdem hands, meaning the relative potential of one starting hand to the next, will give any player more than a fighting chance.

There are exactly 169 possible starting hands in Texas Holdem. One way to determine the best Texas Holdem hands is to apply the measure of playability. The fact is that half of these 169 combinations are virtually unplayable. The other fact is, however, that the other half of these starting hands, statistically speaking, have a 10% chance of success at a table of approximately ten players. It is therefore not necessary to evaluate the merits of each and every starting hand in order to determine the best Texas Holdem hands as long as one keeps in mind that while any hand that starts with a pair is among the best Texas Holdem hands, a pair of aces is clearly a better pocket than a pair of deuces. The following categories then constitute the most playable or "best" Texas Holdem hands. Try to remember them!

As already indicated, a pair in the pocket is one of the best Texas Holdem hands. At the very least you may finish the hand with a pair, but there is also the possibility of a full house, or three or four of a kind. The next grouping is a little more complicated, but suited starting hands comprised of an Ace and/or a face card, and sometimes a 10, are considered among the best Texas Holdem hands. Straights, flushes, straight flushes, high pairs, and even the rare royal flush are all built from such combinations.

Unsuited aces, faces, and high numerical cards such as a 10 combined with a 9 are also some of the best Texas Holdem hands. While a flush is clearly out of the question, there is always the possibility of a straight or a high pair. For a straight to really be considered one of the best Texas Holdem hands, the value of the cards must be 21 or more.

The last and worst of the best Texas Holdem hands are two suited cards in numerical order, or two suited "one gapped" cards, i.e. 7 and 5 of spades. These hands can become straights, flushes, or even a straight flush on a very lucky day. If your pocket is not one of these "best Texas Holdem hands" then the best bet is to fold and wait for one from the winning half of starting hands to fall into your lap.
