5-Card Stud

One of the most popular online poker games is 5-card stud. 5-card stud is a poker game that many people are familiar with and play at home. 5-card stud is possibly the oldest variation of stud poker and most likely originated during the American Civil War. It is less popular today than 7-card stud, but still played frequently in some areas.

There are over 2,000,000 possible hands in 5-card stud. It is a game with a great advantage since players can see most of the cards dealt. This makes 5-card stud an excellent game for betting.

How to Play

5-card stud is a very straightforward game. There can be a maximum of ten players in a game of 5-card stud. In 5-card stud all the players first place a small bet called an ante. The dealer then deals the player's two cards each, one face-up and one face down. The card that is dealt face down is called the "hole card".

The player with the lowest face-up card must make the first bet. This bet is sometimes called the "bring in".

Each player to the left must then match the same bet, raise the bet, or fold. If a player raises the bet, all following players in that round must match the new higher bet.

The dealer then deals each player another card face-up, and another round of betting follows. Each player must again call the bet, raise or fold; this continues until all players have been dealt five cards, four face-up and one face down. 5-card stud is often described by poker players as, "one down, four up". From the third card showing, the betting is opened by the person with the highest hand.

If there is a "show down", all the players that are still in the hand show all five cards. The player with the highest ranking hand or the one who is left wins the entire pot.

In 5-card stud, since players may fold if the bet gets too high, the pot isn't necessarily won by the person who was holding the best hand. Players can bluff their way into winning by apparent confidence and aggressively raising the bets. If no one is left but the final player, the hand he was holding does not need to be shown since no one called his bet.
