How to Play Texas Holdem

If a person knows how to play poker, he may probably already have a good idea of how to play Texas Holdem. For the novice, it's still a relatively easy game to learn. Though it is a variation of poker, there are some basic rules that are specific to the game.

When learning how to play Texas Holdem, the first thing a beginner will notice is that the dealer deals each player two cards from a standard deck. Before the dealing begins, the two players to the left of the dealer put up a specific amount of money to guarantee there is something to win. These are called the "blinds", or specifically, the "big blind" and the "small blind". Now everyone can place a bet. The dealer gets ready to flip three cards, also known as the community cards, onto the table, but before doing so he discards or burns the top card. This is to make sure no one saw the top card by chance. Once the dealer flips three cards onto the table, each player begins to see how each card can benefit his or her hand. A new person learning how to play Texas Holdem has to understand that the idea is to create a good poker hand. A poker hand consists of five cards.

Now it's time to bet again, and from this point on, each player can choose to check, call, raise or fold. The dealer burns a card, and then flips over a fourth card onto the table. This is called Fourth Street or the turn. Again, each player can bet. Then the dealer burns another card and then flips the last card, the fifth card, and this is called Fifth Street or The River. For beginners just learning how to play Texas Holdem, it's good to know that once the fifth card is revealed, it's time to try to strategize and develop their best poker hand. They choose from the two cards that were dealt to them in the beginning of the game along with the five community cards that the dealer flipped onto the table. Once the players are satisfied that they have the best possible poker hand, the last round of betting occurs and then the players reveal their cards. This is the battle between players and an opportunity to show a player's skill, good or bad. The best poker hand wins the game.
