Hoyt Corkins

"Cowboy" Hoyt Corkins

"Cowboy" Hoyt Corkins is an easily recognizable figure at the poker table, always showing clean shaven in a cowboy hat and boots. His friendly but reserved good nature and soft voice are often belied by his feared aggressive playing style. His seemingly contrary attitude and playing style caused commentator Phil Helmuth Jr. to dub him Hoyt "Nightmare" Corkins. Overall, Corkins is a solid poker player, feared and respected by his peers at every tournament and cash game he appears at.

Corkins was introduced to poker by his father who taught him the game. At age 19 he started playing tournaments, and immediately proved that he was a force to be reckoned with. In 1992, Corkins won a World Series of Poker Gold Bracelet in the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha tournament then disappeared from the poker scene. Corkins would eventually finalize a divorce and claim that as the reason for the sudden disappearance. Finally, 11 years later, Corkins' fiancee Natalie convinced him to return to poker, and he won the 2003 World Poker Tour Finals, cashing in a then record breaking $1.1 million first prize.

All together, Corkins has taken first place in both a World Series of Poker event and a World Poker Tour event, as well as 16 other tournaments where he placed in the prize pool, 3 of which were final tables on the World Poker Tour. Corkins total live tournament winnings as of 2007 amount to $2.7 million. When not playing poker, Corkins can often be found tending to his 60 head of cattle in Alabama.
