Johnny Moss - Poker's Finest Champion of Champions

Johnny Moss the Legend!

Known as "The Grand Old Man of Poker," Johnny Moss is celebrated for his longevity and skill in the professional poker arena.

Born in Marshall, Texas in 1907, Johnny Moss grew up in Odessa, where as a young boy he learned to play the game of poker from a group of local swindlers. As a teenager, Moss chose to use his knowledge of the game for a good purpose, and was hired by a local saloon to watch over the card games and report any foul play. Armed with a thorough knowledge of the ins and outs of poker, Johnny Moss became a rounder and traveled the country looking for games in which to try his hand.

In 1949, Johnny Moss accepted an invitation from friend and owner of the Horseshoe Casino, Benny Binion, to play against Nick Dandalos, a famous high-stakes gambler. Accepting, Johnny Moss and "Nick the Greek" engaged in a five-month long poker marathon, which Moss eventually won. It is estimated that his winnings amounted to between two and four million dollars. At the end of the challenge, Dandalos uttered what may be the most famous poker quote of all time when, upon realizing his loss, he turned to Johnny and told him "Mr. Moss, I have to let you go."

In 1971, Moss won the $10,000 freeze out, and in 1972 and 1973, he came in second behind Amarillo "Slim" Preston and Walter "Puggy" Pearson, respectively. In 1974, Johnny Moss captured his third WSOP championship, a feat that has only been matched by one man, Stu Ungar. From 1970 to 1995, Johnny Moss played in every WSOP and won eight WSOP bracelets and over $680,000 in tournament money.
