Born in Marshall, Texas in 1907, Johnny Moss grew up in Odessa, where as a young boy he learned to play the game of poker from a group of local swindlers. In 1949, Johnny Moss accepted an invitation from friend and owner of the Horseshoe Casino, Benny Binion, to play against Nick Dandalos, a famous high-stakes gambler. Accepting, Johnny Moss and "Nick the Greek" engaged in a five-month long poker marathon, which Moss eventually won. It is estimated that his winnings amounted to between two and four million dollars.
