Joseph Hachem

Joseph Hachem, a native of Lebanon, was a chiropractor for 13 years, until a rare blood disorder affected his ability to practice. With a future to plan, Joseph Hachem moved to Melbourne, Australia in the 1970's where he resides today with his wife and four children. He began playing poker as a pastime in various casinos, but remained relatively unknown in the world of professional poker players. It wasn't long before Joseph Hachem took the first steps toward professional poker playing, perfecting his skills and learning the importance of controlling his emotions.

Joseph Hachem began winning various tournaments in Australia including 5th place in the Australian Poker Championships, $1,000 in a No Limit Holdem event, 3rd place in the 2003 Crown Melbourne Championships Limit Holdem event, and 5th place in the 2004 Melbourne Holdem Championships Limit Holdem tournament. He added another $25,850 to his winnings by taking 10th place in a 2005 World Series of Poker satellite tournament in 2005.

In 2005, Joseph Hachem decided to enter the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas, the first major tournament for him. He entered the tournament with the full $10,000 buy-in, rather than by invitational, along with 5,619 other entrants, including almost every one of the top professional poker players in the world. After nine days of stiff competition at the Rio Casino Hotel and 14 hours at the final table at Binion's Casino, Joseph Hachem won the championship and earned his place in the history of the World Series of Poker. He took home $7.5 million, the biggest pool prize in the history of poker, and the coveted $63,000 gold bracelet. Joseph Hachem was the first Australian to win the World Series of Poker Main Event. As his fellow countrymen and many supporters cheered and shouted, "Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi," he wrapped himself in the Australian flag and said, "Thank you, America."

Joseph Hachem is assured of commercial contracts and even more success in the future. His prize as the 2005 World Series of Poker Champion will go a long way toward taking care of his wife, mother, and family. Today, he sponsors and plays online at the Poker Stars casino, along with two other professional poker players, and at the Crown Casino in Melbourne.

Winning the championship changed his life. Joseph Hachem continues to play online, or at the Crown Casino, while managing a broking business in Pascoe Vale, Australia.
