Mike Sexton

Professional poker players often seem to have highly interesting backgrounds, and Mike Sexton, winner of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Tournament of Champions, is no exception. Perhaps his former life dictated much of his professional life, and worked in his favor to bring him into the spotlight of poker fame - or perhaps it was just a twist of fate, Lady Luck picking a random card and giving her blessing to the most interesting choice she could find.

Before his foray into the world of poker, Sexton attended Ohio State University and received his degree in Public Recreation. He had long been interested in this subject, supporting his education through a gymnastics scholarship! His physical journey continued in 1970 when he joined the 82nd Airborne Division. He served a few years without seeing any action, since the soldiers of the Division had just returned from the front lines of Vietnam, before becoming a sales representative for the military, and concurrently, a teacher of ballroom dancing. During this time, he met his first love and married, with the intention to start a family and settle down to a normal life. He also coached a little league baseball team, which kept him away from the professional world of poker...for a while, at least.

Then in 1977, Sexton met his second love: professional poker. He took a leap of faith and began to earn his living through professional poker alone, moving to Las Vegas in 1985 to become a professional player. His claims to fame are many, including a position as co-host for the World Poker Tour (WPT) on the Travel Channel, frequent published works in Cardplayer Magazine, and the creation of one of the most important poker events of the year: the Tournament of Champions of Poker. This event lasted only three years, but brought fame and fortune to the biggest names in the game over a short period of time.

In the game of poker, Mike Sexton has found success in many of his endeavors. In 1992, he won the Foxwood World Poker Finals prize of $10,000. In 1996 and 1997, he won the $5,000 pot in the Four Queens Summer Classic No Limits championship. In 2003, he moved up by winning the five thousand pound pot in the Paris Heads-Up Championship, and recently made poker history by racking in the $1,000,000 first prize in the Poker Tournament of Champions in 2006.

Sexton has risen from humble beginnings to the league of poker masters, and his professionalism seems to be only outweighed by his generosity - after winning the WSOP Tournament of Champions, he donated half his winnings to five prestigious charities. Mike seems likely to continue in this endeavor, having pledged half his big winnings to the rest of the world.
