No Limit Poker Strategy

The no limit poker strategy is about the same as any other strategy for poker. Here, poker god Hoyle gives us the North Star that should guide all players: "Get out of every hand as cheaply as possible, but when you get the cards, make them pay." To look for one strategy that applies to all poker hands and all poker games is an exercise in futility. If it's true that the only constant in the universe is "change," what does that tell you about poker? Will your strategy change if you are holding a royal flush, as opposed to when you were holding a hand full of garbage? Of course it will. If it doesn't, you should consider some other field of endeavor. The people you are playing with will certainly have something to do with the way you play your hand. Are they all loud mouth drunks, or are they serious players? This will be a big consideration when it comes time to bluff, since in large part, bluffing really amounts to what one can get away with. You'll have to bluff once in a while, because if you don't, and you always play only solid cards, you've basically told the other players what you have in your hand.

There is no winning strategy for every game. If there were, it would be a book on the best sellers list, and everyone would already have a copy. Nevertheless, a strategy can flow from your immediate circumstances. Conservative play-smaller bets-are usually the order of the day when money is short. If table stakes is the game, then players with the most money can wager heavy bets on every card, therefore pounding you into submission. Is money then--a strategy? You bet it is. If a player keeps raising but has been caught bluffing twice, there is a large pot, and you have a pretty good hand, what is the strategy here? The only thing you can do is listen to yourself. If you think you are beat, you probably are. Poker players are usually their own best friend.

Make part of your strategy not to play when you are upset, have been drinking heavily, or are extremely mad. Never take more money to the game than you can afford to lose. Set a few traps during the game. Intentionally get caught bluffing once or twice. Know who you are playing with. Learn how to fold quickly. You don't need, or want, to see every hand to the end. Remember Hoyle, "Get out of every hand as cheaply as possible, but when you get the cards, make them pay."
