Poker Bluff - Bluffing and Semi-Bluffing

Poker bluff - bluffing and semi-bluffing requires skill and consistency, but you can master this fine art. All it takes is a bit of understanding and knowing how to read your opponents. The bluff is deceptively simple-you have a poor hand, but bet as though you have something good.

One of the strengths of a good bluff is committing to it from the start of the round in the exact same way you do when you have a winning hand. You're employing psychology to help your ploy succeed. If the other players know your habits when you hold good hands, this will come in handy for the bluff.

The trick of the bluff is to establish a certain consistency with your winning hands, and save your misdirection for when you need it. This means using a bit more trickery by tossing a quite obvious bluff out there on the odd occasion. Make your opponents think they know your 'bad hand' habits. When you truly need to throw your weight around the poker table, they won't be as likely to dismiss you so easily. When you play tight, after a while you can pick up on when someone is weak. You can be even weaker (7,2), but if you throw a raise or check-raise you often can get your opponent to lay their hand down.

The semi-bluff is a different animal. This is a better position to be in because the semi-bluff is used for a hand that may improve after you take your draw cards. If your opening hand isn't what it could be, but you see potential to pick up the right cards, betting as though you already hold those cards could work in your favor. Once the draw cards come, you'll have to decide whether you should continue the ploy, fold, or hang in the round with a decent hand.

If you have been caught bluffing recently in the game, it's probably a good idea to play conservatively for a while. The other players are on to your tricks, and you'll need time to lull them back into a false sense of confidence about your playing style. Approach the bluff with caution when playing against a lot of people. It's said that poor players are also a bad bet when you're trying to push your luck. A poor player is inconsistent; you can't count on them to do anything but call you out every single time. Finally, the bluff and semi-bluff are skills that require some learning, but they are not impossible to pick up. With a little practice, you too can learn how to do it right.
