Steve Dannenman - ''Poker's Everyman''

The world of professional poker is full of characters that bring personality and excitement to the game. One such character is Steve Dannenman. As runner up in the 2005 World Series of Poker, this poker "everyman," as he is called by fans, not only enjoyed a four million dollar payday, but also put his mark on the WSOP.

The Maryland CPA and Mortgage broker's following initially started because of the entertainment he provided television viewers during the tournament. Calling home frequently from his cell phone in order to update his family on his progress, Steve was caught speaking candidly by television microphones. On one occasion, he was overheard telling his wife that he had run out of clean underwear, which helped him develop his everyday Joe persona.

The real popularity, though, started because Steve Dannenman needed a little help to pay his way into the WSOP. To make it happen, his friend Jerry Ditzell matched Steve's $5000 to make the entry fee. A deal was struck, but with no lawyers or contracts. Instead, it was a shake of the hand and the trust of a friend that bound them, however; that was all that Steve needed.

After his second place finish, Steve Dannenman showed the world what the true meaning of honesty and friendship was when he split his four million dollar winnings down the middle with the friend who had helped get into the tournament. By becoming a millionaire through the WSOP and making his friend a millionaire at the same time, Dannenman became a huge favorite of poker fans everywhere and earned the name of "Poker's Everyman."

Besides letting television viewers into his life and splitting four million dollars with a buddy who had loaned him $5,000, Steve Dannenman went on to endear himself to the public even more; when asked if he would take his two million dollars and retire from his job as a certified public accountant, Dannenman explained that he would keep his job as a CPA because not only was poker too boring to do for a living, but also because too many people count on him doing his job.

Steve Dannenman, the millionaire CPA and poker everyman can now afford to play in the tournaments he chooses to. Furthermore, he won't have to worry about finding someone to bankroll him into future WSOP tournaments. He will, though, keep his day job so that he doesn't let anyone down. The poker world is full of characters, for sure, but none are quite like Steve Dannenman.
