Two to eleven players at a time can play Texas Holdem, because unlike other stud variations of Poker, most of the cards in Texas Holdem are "community" cards-cards the dealer places face-up in the center of the table for all players to use. Like all Poker games, the object of Texas Holdem is to form the highest possible five-card hand, using any combination of available cards. The Poker hands rankings are the same in Texas Holdem as for all other forms of Poker: from highest to lowest, they are Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, One Pair, and High Card. There are five stages of play in Texas Holdem. The first is called the pre-flop. Each player is dealt two cards face down, and these cards are called the pocket pair or hole cards. A round of betting follows the pre-flop, and generally few players fold (give up) at this stage. The next step in Texas Holdem is the flop. When the first round of betting is finished, the dealer lays three cards face-up in the center of the table. These cards are appropriately deemed "the flop." Most players who intend to fold do so after the flop is dealt. For those who stay in, another round of betting ensues before the next stage. After the flop in Texas Holdem, the dealer lays another face-up card on the table alongside the first three. This card is called the "turn." There may be a few folders on the turn, but most will either bet or check (decline to raise the pot) and wait for the final face-up card, the "river", to be dealt. The river card in Texas Holdem is the signal for the final, often furious round of betting as players determine their final hands, which can be constructed using one or both hole cards and any combination of the five shared cards. Once the last bet is called, Texas Holdem enters the "showdown" where all players reveal their pocket pair and call their chosen hands. The pot is then distributed amid gloating and groans. In rare instances, the five community cards in the center of the table will comprise the best possible hand of the game. When this happens the pot is split between all players who have not folded.
