World Series of Poker Winner

The 2005 World Series of Poker winner, Joseph Hachem, took the runner-up out in the sixth hand of a one-on-one play in the final round. The final table was a marathon that lasted 14 hours after six full days of poker. At first it didn't seem that Hachem would be the World Series of Poker winner, but he held onto a small stack for most of the final table, and then managed to hang on until he got a lucky break. He slowly built his stack of chips up and became the chip leader for the final one-on-one against Steve Dannenman. In the end, it only took six hands for Hachem to beat Dannenman and become that year's World Series of Poker winner.

Joseph, who hails from Australia, took home $7.5 million in winnings, having taken the crown just before sunrise. For the final table, Hachem beat out John Derick Barch, owner of Big Johnson's Beer Garden in Richardson, Texas, and Daniel Bergsdorf, formerly a truck driver from Sweden who had given up the truck driving career to take on being a professional poker player. Also at the table were Andrew, "The Monk" Black, from Dublin, Ireland who had previously finished 14th in the 1997 World Series of Poker, Aaron Kanter of Elk Grove, CA, and Brad Kondraki, from Kingston, Pennsylvania. Kondraki, who began playing a couple of years ago, also made the final round in his first year. He plays poker to pay for law school. Rounding out the final table are Scott Lazar, a magician, and Mike "The Mouth" Matusow. The last two left standing were Hachem and Dannenman. Steve Danneman, who held out till the last, is a CPA and mortgage broker from Severn, MD.

Hachem took Danneman out with a 7-high straight. In the beginning of the hand, Danneman had initially raised $700,000 after Hachem called the dealer. Hachem then re-raised to $1.7 million. The turn card was an ace and Hachem bet another $2 million. Danneman raised to $5 million and Hachem went "all in" with more than $30 million. Danneman called. He had held out for a 7 to match Hachem's straight, but the River card didn't bear it out for him and Hachem became the World Series of Poker winner for 2005.

Joseph Hachem, a chiropractor from Melbourne, Australia, had moved his family from Lebanon in 1972. He had been a successful chiropractor for 13 years before giving that up to play poker professionally.
