WSOP TourThe WSOP Tour, or the World Series of Poker Tour, is generally the most anticipated poker event of the year. Held annually since 1969, the WSOP Tour is also the most prominent and celebrated set of poker tournaments held worldwide. The WSOP Tour was started by San Antonio, Texas native Tom Moore, who created the invitation-only event at Reno's Holiday Hotel and Casino. Crandell Addington, came out as the winner and went on to place in the top 10 of the WSOP Tour main event eight times. After its humble beginnings, the WSOP Tour evolved and expanded over time with the direction and guidance of Benn Binion, legendary casino owner and poker player, as well as his two sons Ted and Jack Binion. The nature of the WSOP Tour drastically improved through their efforts, and the Binion family also helped to make poker a very popular game around the world. The poker game Five-Card Stud was added in 1973 to the main event, and ever since new events have been added and removed from the WSOP Tour. Harrah's Entertainment purchased Binion's Horseshoe in 2004 and renamed it simply "Binion's". Check out the entire 2010 WSOP Schedule! Today the WSOP Tour contains many different poker games, including Texas Hold 'Em Limit, Omaha Pot Limit, Seven-Card Stud, Five-Card Stud, Pot Limit, No Limit, Razz, Deuce-to-Seven Lowball, other Lowball variants, and countless more. Winners for each tournament, or event, receive a prestigious WSOP bracelet made of gold. The grand finale, or "main event" of the WSOP Tour is the World Championship Event, and the winner, in addition to receiving cash, a gold bracelet, and a photo at the Gallery of Champions, is crowned the World Champion of Poker for the year-considered to be the ultimate achievement for any professional poker player in their career. The poker game played for the WSOP Tour main event has been the $10,000 Buy-In No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em tournament since 1972. There is now officially a cap of 8,000 players for the main event, and all participants-excluding only winners of the WSOP main event satellite tournaments, who are guaranteed a spot-must themselves supply the $10,000 buy-in in order to play. Participation in the WSOP Tour has grown exponentially year to year since its beginnings. For example, 4,780 entered in the various events in 2000, but five years later more than 23,000 poker players registered to play. This exploding growth can be attributed to the coverage the WSOP Tour has been receiving through various media outlets, especially TV.
