At the time, Howard Lederer was determined to become a world class chess player. He quickly changed focus though when he discovered a poker room in the back of the chess club he attended. He was quickly hooked by the game and in a very short period of time was playing poker all night and working as an errand boy during the day to make money for his nightly games. The schedule got to him and it wasn't until he backed off a bit and lightened his schedule that he began to become a successful poker player. He was soon playing at New York's Mayfair Club with fellow poker greats Dan Harrington, Steve Zolotow, Jay Heimowitz, and Eric Seidel.
