Lowball PokerLowball poker is a form of poker where the lowest hand wins. There are a few common variations on this theme, depending on the aces being used as high or low cards and whether straights and flushes are used. Every player is dealt five cards facing down and then there is a betting round where the player has to bet or fold. Remaining players are then able to discard and subsequently replace any cards in their hand. This is called the 'Draw'.The most common versions of lowball poker are California lowball and Kansas City lowball. California lowball has an Ace to five low, where 5-4-3-2-A is the lowest possible hand, aces are considered low, straights and flushes ignored and a limit. Kansas City lowball has a Deuce to seven low, where 7-5-4-3-2 is the lowest hand, aces are high, straights and flushes are high hands and usually has no-limit. There are other variations of lowball poker as well: Razz, which is a seven card stud with an A-5 rank, Triple Draw, which has three drawing rounds, played limit and can have A-5 or 2-7 ranking, London Lowball, a seven card stud with a, A-6 ranking and pot limit. Lowball poker is usually played with one or more blinds, sometimes with an added ante, and some allow the big blind to be called while others need the minimum open to be double the big blind. In limit poker the normal play is to have the limit double after the draw. Lowball poker is sometimes played high-low split whereby the player who has the traditional winning hand (high hand) splits the winnings with the lowest hand. However, if you play a split pot game it is not uncommon to have a tie for the low hand, therefore spreading the pot more thinly. On the flip side, playing an ace-to-five high-low game also increases the chances of winning both high and low hands as a low straight or flush may count for both. Lowball is popular in a large number of casinos because it is often attractive to novice gamblers, and to some it may seem easier to draw a low ranking hand than a traditional high combination, but of course the chances are the same for any card, high or low.
