7-Card Stud

7-card stud was, until recently, the most popular poker variant played in home games in the United States. It is frequently played in casinos in the East, although Texas Holdem is becoming much more popular.

How to Play

7-card stud is a game for two to eight players. When played in casinos, an ante and a "bring in" are common. In home games, however, very often only an ante is used.

Cards are burned before all dealing rounds. They are removed from the deck and put aside, without being shown.

Two cards are dealt face down to each player. These are called the "hole cards," followed by one card face up, known as the "door card." A round of betting follows, started by the person with the lowest door card. Betting is done clockwise. Players may match the bet and call, raise or fold. These cards are often said to be on "Third Street."

A second face up card is dealt to each player, followed by another round of betting. This card is on "Fourth Street." At this point the highest hand showing starts the betting.

A third face up card is dealt to each player, followed by a round of betting. This card is on "Fifth Street."

A fourth face up card is dealt to each player, followed by a round of betting. This card is on "Sixth Street."

The last card is dealt face down to each player. This card is called the "River."

If there is more than one person left in the game, there is a "Show Down." The person who shows the best hand wins. In 7-card stud, each player makes the best five-card hand that he can out of his seven cards. In some cases the winner is simply the only person who hasn't folded.

Poker players often refer to 7-card stud as, "Two down, four up, one down."
Because seven cards to eight players equals 60 cards and there are only 52 cards in the deck, home games of 7 card stud are often limited to seven players. In casinos this is less of a problem since at least one player is expected to fold. In home games the burn cards may be used if a limited number of cards is all that is needed to finish the deal.
