Legend has it that Nick the Greek and Benny Binion decided to challenge each other in 1949 to a high stakes poker marathon. This marathon lasted for 5 months and drew a crowd each day. Moss won and walked away with more than $2 million in prize money. It was not until 1970 that Binion decided to recreate the marathon with a wider audience. He won each year until 1972 when Thomas Preston won the marathon. The World Series of Poker Tournaments grew even more popular with the advert of satellite tournaments and television shows, showing viewers the player's 'hole cards' and by lowering the buy-ins. By 2004 there were 33 competitions with a wide variety of games. These now include Texas Holdem, Omaha, Seven Card Stud, Razz, and Low Ball. The WSOP has become so popular that it is now a regular feature on the ESPN sports network. What Moss had discovered during the first marathon match in 1949 was that Poker was an excellent spectator sport. This has proven to be a money spinner for networks and has also increased the popularity of Poker on the whole. If you ever thought that you could never be a world class Poker player, think again.

Once you win this tournament you are crowned the World Series of Poker Champion. Nationalities have varied over the years. The 2005 Champion, Joe Hachem, was an Australian and a native of Lebanon.
